BACK PAIN

Back pain is a problem that affects millions of Americans. When your back hurts, many other things suffer too. Simple everyday tasks like getting in and out of a car, putting on a coat, picking up a child, sitting at a desk, or standing for periods of time may become unmanageable. There are many causes of back pain: injuries, heavy lifting, ageing, recreational activities, pregnancy, and the stress of everyday life.

HOW CAN CHIROPRACTORS HELP?

If you experience back pain that lasts more than a few days, consult one of our chiropractors for an assessment. Our chiropractors will recommend a course of treatment specific to you. Most people respond well to treatment and get back to their regular activities faster than if they chose to wait it out. Here are three common treatment techniques chiropractors use to help you become pain-free:

  1. Soft Tissue Therapy: This is where your chiropractor works to relax and treat tight and sore muscles. There are a variety of ways to bring relief to muscles when they are the source of pain, such as manual release therapy (stretching the muscle while applying pressure), trigger point therapy (applying direct pressure on the area of the muscle that is most tense), or instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy (using a tool to apply gentle pressure and sweep over the area).

  2. Manual Therapy: When a joint isn’t moving as well as it should, your chiropractor may utilize this treatment technique to help regain motion within a joint. This can be accomplished through joint mobilization (slow, gentle stretches of the affected joint) or manipulation (a quick but gentle movement that stretches the joint).

  3. Exercise Therapy/Self-Management: Your chiropractor will be able to provide simple exercises that you can do at home to help with your pain and to help prevent it from coming back. They will also be able to provide you with safe lifting techniques, tips for good posture, and other strategies you can incorporate into your day to prevent re-injury.

Many people choose to just “tough it out,” but ignoring back pain doesn’t make it go away. It can even make it worse. It’s important to treat not only the symptoms but also the cause. If back pain is affecting your ability to get through the day and keeping you away from your favourite activities, consider chiropractic care.

INFANT AND CHILD

Here are the top 5 conditions that Dr. Kemp and team treats with pediatric chiropractic care.
Colic Relief
Colicy babies cry relentlessly and it can be incredibly difficult on both the baby and the parents. Colic is caused by abdominal pain or underdeveloped or underperforming gastrointestinal tract, and there are few resources for parents other than the sentiment that “they will grow out of it.” However chiropractic care for babies with colic has shown to relieve symptoms (and thus the crying) in as many as 94% of babies. By performing gentle manipulations, Dr. Kemp stimulates the nerve flow to the small intestine and increases peristalsis – the wave-like motion of muscles in the gut that pushes liquid and gas through.
Torticollis
Torticollis causes the head to tilt down or to one side because of problems in the muscles of the neck. It is fairly common in newborns. The baby may have been cramped in the womb or was in an abnormal position, such as a breech. Sometimes torticollis may not present at birth and only becomes obvious once the baby gains more strength in their neck. Chiropractic for babies with torticollis works to gently adjust the cervical spine and massage the muscles in the neck to relieve the tilt and allow the neck to grow properly.
GERD
GERD is short for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It causes acid reflux to back up into the esophagus. Babies with GERD often spit up a lot and are very fussy after eating because they are so uncomfortable. Through gentle manipulations of the spine and neck, the nervous system is stimulated and improves the control of the upper valve of the stomach, stopping the reflux.
Breast Feeding
Chiropractic care for babies can help improve latching. If the baby is experiencing latching issues, Dr. Kemp will gently adjust the spine for proper alignment and positioning when feeding, and she will check the cranial bones including the jaw to see if a correction is needed to get the proper suck and ease fatigue when feeding. When we remove nervous system interference, our bodies function better.
Difficulties Sleeping
The birthing experience can be stressful on the baby’s body and nervous system, chiropractic stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system to allow the baby’s nervous system to calm and rest easier.

HIP PAIN

Our hips serve innumerable functions for our body; they keep us upright, allow us to bear weight, walk smoothly, run, jump, kick, play. Since the hips are engaged in nearly every way we move, pain in this area can have debilitating consequences for patients. Although hip pain is frequently the result of osteoarthritis or injury, it can also be a sign of other health conditions. A doctor of chiropractic can help you identify the source of your hip pain and develop a tailored treatment plan for your symptoms.

Common Causes of Hip Pain

Inflammation

Hip pain can derive from the structures within the hip joint or from the structures and ligaments surrounding the joint. Within the joint itself, there is limited space for the femoral head to move in the socket of the acetabulum. If an injury or illness triggers inflammation, this space can become easily filled with fluid or blood, causing pain. Inflammation of the sac outside of the hip, the bursitis, can also be the source of pain.  Bursitis is often the result of minor trauma or overuse.

Overuse Injuries

Heavy wear and tear on the cartilage surrounding the hip joint can cause arthritis and inflammation. Routine daily activities that place stress on the hip can also cause inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the hip. This type of pain can develop gradually overtime.

Referred Pain and Other Sources of Hip Pain

Often what patients describe as “hip pain” may actually derive from a different part of the body. Some patients that experience pain in the lower back and hips may actually be suffering from dysfunction of the sacroiliac joints, or the joints that connect the sacrum to the iliac bones.

One of the more common types of referred pain is sciatica, or inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve. This can result from conditions like disc herniation, spinal degeneration, narrowing of the spine due to osteoarthritis, or Piriformis syndrome. Irritation of the nerve root can cause pain the in low-back, buttocks, hips, as well as radiating leg pain.

How Chiropractic Can Help Hip Pain

Your chiropractor will create a personalized treatment plan that could include chiropractic adjustments, exercise therapy, posture advice, stretching, massage, coordination with other health practitioners, and more. Treatments will aim to reduce inflammation, relax any existing muscle spasms, strengthen weakened muscles, and improve the mobility of the joint.

Depending on the cause of your hip pain, chiropractic adjustments could help.

Multiple studies have found that chiropractic adjustments are effective in relieving sciatica, a common cause of pain in the hip and lower back.  In a study comparing the efficacy of chiropractic to surgery for sciatica, 60% of chiropractic patients with severe sciatica had substantially improved symptoms that enabled them to avoid surgery.  Cases studies have also suggested that chiropractic can relieve pain associated with sacroiliac joint dysfunction and Piriformis syndrome, which both frequently result in hip pain.

Some patients with hip osteoarthritis (HOA) have also benefited from chiropractic care. In one study, 83% of  HOA patients improved within nine visits to a chiropractor. Treatment included axial manipulation of the hip, stretching, and full kinetic chain treatment ( manipulative therapy to the spine, knee, ankle, or foot when appropriate).

Natural treatments of hip pain can allow patients to avoid the costs and risks of surgery and drugs.
